Runaway Plane Into Car: Westerly Airport

The Rhode Island state police are investigating a crash at the Westerly airport on Sunday.

WESTERLY, RI — A single-engine plane hit an unoccupied car in the parking lot on Airport Road on Sunday afternoon. According to Laura Kirk, spokeswoman for the Rhode Island State Police, the accident was reported around 3:55 p.m. One man was injured and went to the hospital with injuries described as "non life threatening." His name is not being released. Another man was involved in the accident but did not need medical treatment.

"Two men were performing routine maintenance on the plane, a single-engine Cessna leased by Skydive Westerly, when it unexpectedly taxied forward, went through a wire fence and into a grassy parking light where it struck an unoccupied car," she said.

The crash is still under investigation.
