Raimondo Declares July 28 'Governor's Bay Day'

NARRAGANSETT-SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — Next Sunday will be Rhode Island's official summer beach day. On Thursday, Governor Gina Raimondo signed an executive order that officially made July 28 this year's "Governor's Bay Day," an annual day to celebrate Rhode Island's many public beaches.

"Celebrating Governor’s Bay Day is one of my favorite traditions and a chance for Rhode Islanders to enjoy our beautiful beaches and parks," Raimondo said. "We are so fortunate to live near some of the country’s most spectacular beaches and in a state where some of the best fishing and boating are right in our backyard. I invite Rhode Islanders to enjoy the Ocean State with family and friends on July 28."

The daylong celebration includes a variety of free, family-friendly activities and free parking at all state beaches. Additionally, Rhode Islanders can saltwater fish without a fishing license.

Residents can also ride the bus to the beach for free, as all Rhode Island Public Transit Authority South County beach service on Route 66 will be free. Beach service will be provided on a first come, first-served basis.

"We're excited to welcome Rhode Islanders and tourists to visit our world-class state beaches and parks on Governor's Bay Day," said Janet Coit, the director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. "Narragansett Bay is the heart of Rhode Island and a vital resource that provides countless outdoor recreation opportunities and supports the livelihood of thousands. Rhode Islanders have stepped up and supported strong laws to protect our waters, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made in cleaning up the Bay. We hope everyone takes some time out on Governor’s Bay Day to enjoy our beautiful Bay and coastal waters!"

Roger Wheeler State Beach will host a sand sculpture contest, arts and crafts, free sunscreen checks and environmental education presentations from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Governor Raimondo and her family will be part of the celebration from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

While the main festivities will be at Roger Wheeler beach, all state beaches will have free parking. They are:

• East Beach, Charlestown
• East Matunuck State Beach, South Kingstown
• Misquamicut State Beach
• Roger W. Wheeler State Beach, Narragansett
• Salty Brine State Beach, Narragansett
• Scarborough State Beaches (North and South), Narragansett
