Rhode Island DEM Holding Lifeguard Test At Misquamicut Beach

WESTERLY, RI — Prospective lifeguards have the opportunity to take the state's certification test this week. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will hold an additional test at Misquamicut Beach in Westerly.

To reduce wait times and ensure proper social distancing, all candidates are asked to register in advance and schedule a test time. Tests will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The certification is required for all applicants to lifeguard positions at state beaches, as well as first aid and CPR. To qualify for the test, candidates must have valid training cards in lifeguarding, first aid and CPR. Copies of certificates must be submitted in advance, along with a signed waiver. At check in, all candidates will need to show a valid photo ID.

The test costs $10. Because it cannot be collected in advance, all candidates must pay by check or exact change.

The following social distancing guidelines have been put in place to ensure the safety of candidates and staff.

• Candidates cannot enter the testing area until 15 minutes before their scheduled time.
• Everyone must remain at least 6 feet apart during check in and check out.
• Candidates will be required to bring and wear a fabric face covering, and will be screened for symptoms upon entry.
• All lifesaving equipment including surfboards, buoys, rope and rescue mannequins will be sanitized between use.
• Staff will wear a face covering throughout the test, only removing if they are able to remain 6 feet away from others.
• Candidates will be given hand sanitizer after their test is complete.
