Scarborough Beaches North, South Closed To Swimming
The closures came just hours after all Rhode Island beaches were reopened.
NARRAGANSETT, RI — Just as soon as all Rhode Island beaches were reopened to swimming, another has been closed. On Tuesday afternoon, the Rhode Island Department of Health recommended closing Scarborough Beach, north and south, in Narragansett due to high bacteria levels.
The closure comes just hours after the department reopened the last two beaches that remained closed after last week's spate of closures.
The department said it is working with the Department of Environmental Management to determine what caused the spike in bacteria levels. Most often, high bacteria counts are caused by heavy rain, which carries contaminated runoff into the water.
