South Kingstown Cancels 4th of July Celebration

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — The town of South Kingstown has canceled its annual Independence Day celebration at Old Mountain Field in Wakefield. Due to crowd restrictions put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, town officials said there is no safe way to hold the event this year.

"We know that this event is the highlight of the summer for so many of our residents, residents from neighboring communities, and vacationers from around the state and the country.," the town said in a statement. "Unfortunately, because of the continuing public health threat presented by COVID-19,the community is not able to gather together to celebrate as we usually do at Old Mountain Field — and all the other favorite viewing spots across town, to enjoy each other’s company, live music, great food, and spectacular fireworks that have always made this event so special."

Although there will not be an official celebration, the town will hold a flag raising at Old Mountain Field in the morning. More information is forthcoming, along with information about how the public can attend remotely.

The event, featuring a performance by Take It To The Bridge, has been tentatively rescheduled to Oct. 10, assuming that large crowds will be allowed again by that time.

"We hope everyone enjoys a wonderful 4th of July weekend, and finds new ways to safely celebrate Independence Day with family, friends, and neighbors this year," town officials said.
