Union Fire District Awards Night

Fourth annual ceremony honored civilian heroes and those who answered the call during the historic flood of 2010.

The Union Fire District of South Kingstown honored its own and several civilians during a year of historic ups and down at its annual awards ceremony at the Elks Lodge Thursday night.  

Town council President Ella Whaley, council members James O'Neill and Carol Hagan McEntee were on hand, along with General Assembly Senator V. Susan Sosnowski and Representatives Spencer Dickinson, Teresa Tanzi, and Donna Walsh.  

Several residents and civilians were honored for their bravery and commitment to safety including Kaela Dionne, Phyllis Bouchard, Marc and Robin Winemiller, Ron Stern, and Lori Plummer.

Dozens of UFD Firefighters received special citations for their actions during the historic flooding of 2010 - a time where many called out of their day jobs to help their reeling town by pumping out flooded basements, performing well-being checks and rescuing civilians.

The honored firefighters received a ribbon of merit and a Union Fire District Challenge Coin.

Firefighter Brian Kroll of Peace Dale received honors for heroic actions performed during the floods which were witnessed by a South Kingstown Police officer, and Special Hazards 1 of Peace Dale received a unit citation for their extraordinary efforts in April 2010.  

Union Fire District Deputy Chief Jack Carney also received an administrative award for his 50 years of dedicated service to South Kingstown.  Firefighter Timothy Redmond also received an administrative award.
