Wakefield's Alvin O'Donnell: Chemist, Hockey Player, Sailor Dies at 74

He was born in Providence and leaves a wife and five grandchildren.

Alvin J. O’Donnell, 74, of Wakefield passed away on Friday, September 12, 2014.

He was the husband of Joan M. (Thibodeau) O’Donnell for 51 years. Born in Providence, a son of the late Richard and Norma (Abbott) O’Donnell.

Mr. O’Donnell was a chemist for Pfizer for many years before retiring in 1994. He played hockey for LaSalle Academy and Providence College and was an avid sailor.

Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Sean A. O’Donnell and his wife Carla, Scott I. O’Donnell and his wife Jody both of Wakefield and Shannon Roberson and her husband Doug of Melbourne, FL; five grandchildren, Brendan, Nolan, and Ian O’Donnell and Luke and Liam Roberson. He was the brother of the late Richard O’Donnell.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 9-10:30 am in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High St., Wakefield. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 143 Main St., Wakefield, RI 02879.
