7 Rhode Island Beaches Closed For High Bacteria Levels

Five Newport beaches and one each in South Kingstown and Narragansett were included in the closures.

NEWPORT, RI — Seven Rhode Island beaches were closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels, the Department of Health said. Five of the beaches are in Newport, and one each in South Kingstown and Narragansett.

The beaches are:

  • YMCA Camp Fuller in South Kingstown
  • Fort Adams State Park Beach in Newport
  • Kings Park Beach in Newport
  • Gooseberry Beach in Newport
  • Hazard's Beach in Newport
  • Spouting Rock Beach in Newport
  • Scarborough State Beach South in Narragansett

The spate of closures is likely due to heavy rain that fell across Rhode Island Wednesday night into Thursday, with some areas seeing more than three inches of rainfall. The Department of Health previously explained that high bacteria levels are most often caused by stormwater runoff.
