Aquidneck Island Plumbing Sets the Tone for Softball Championship Series

AIP dominates Cappy's 12-0 in game one of best-of-three series.

The men of the Newport Men's Softball league may not be baseball players by trade. But Monday night during the league's first championship game, they played the part well: spitting sunflower seeds, taping their wrists and lacing up their cleats, all with an intensity and passion that was evident to those watching the game at Toppa Field.

With Aquidneck Island Plumbing squaring off against Cappy's, the best of a three-game set began and ended with solid defense by AIP, starting by retiring the side in order in the first. Cappy's threatened in the following innings, loading the bases in the 3rd with two outs, but were denied by the slick glove-work of left fielder Joey Cyr, who made a spectacular shoe-string grab on a potential run scoring bloop single to left.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Zack Grassi launched a two-run blast over the right fielder's head, to propel AIP to a 3-0 lead. Following Grassi's homer, the rest of the AIP lineup followed suit.

AIP played pepper with Cappy's by scattering an abundance of extra base hits all over the field throughout the duration of the game. Every player in the starting lineup reached base for AIP at least once during the contest.

In the field, AIP did not allow a run all game behind the pitching of Brian Vieira and nearly flawless defense. AIP took home the win in a 12-0 rout of Cappy's.
