This past weekend there was a bit of excitement and concern for a young baby seagull that apparently had fallen from the roof of Long Wharf Mall. Â When my employee got to work Saturday, she called to tell me there was this beautiful little bird sitting in front of the door to my shop. Â As she approached it, a large seagull, the mother, dived right for her. Â The baby did move enough for her to get inside. Â Throughout the whole day, shopkeepers and pedestrians kept seeing the baby walking around and stopping to look at its reflection in the shop windows. Â Many calls were made, to The Potter League, The Newport Police, Fish and Wildlife, among others but nobody could figure out what to do. Â In the meantime, people were frightened when the mother swooped at them. Â Even the Police Officer laughed and left when she did it to him. Â I was hoping when I came in on Sunday the mother might have found a way to get her baby but no luck. Â
I decided to try to help and I brought a blanket and my dogs carrier with me in case. Â I decided to go to the Fire Department on Americas Cup and I explained the situation. Â They were wonderful. Â They offered to come with me to see what they could do. Â Ultimately, I was able to get the blanket over the baby and get her in the carrier. Â The 5 firemen got keys to the building, found their way to the roof up a steep ladder, pulled the carrier up and released her back to her mother. Â
I would personally like to thank each and every one of them. They were caring, and concerned for my feelings also. Â If you know and or see them please tell them Thanks. Â A very happy ending. Â Pictures on my Facebook page, Shana Gaines
