Baby Seagull Saved with the help of The Newport Fire Department

This past weekend there was a bit of excitement and concern for a young baby seagull that apparently had fallen from the roof of Long Wharf Mall.  When my employee got to work Saturday, she called to tell me there was this beautiful little bird sitting in front of the door to my shop.  As she approached it, a large seagull, the mother, dived right for her.  The baby did move enough for her to get inside.  Throughout the whole day, shopkeepers and pedestrians kept seeing the baby walking around and stopping to look at its reflection in the shop windows.  Many calls were made, to The Potter League, The Newport Police, Fish and Wildlife, among others but nobody could figure out what to do.  In the meantime, people were frightened when the mother swooped at them.  Even the Police Officer laughed and left when she did it to him.  I was hoping when I came in on Sunday the mother might have found a way to get her baby but no luck.
I decided to try to help and I brought a blanket and my dogs carrier with me in case.  I decided to go to the Fire Department on Americas Cup and I explained the situation.  They were wonderful.  They offered to come with me to see what they could do.  Ultimately, I was able to get the blanket over the baby and get her in the carrier.  The 5 firemen got keys to the building, found their way to the roof up a steep ladder, pulled the carrier up and released her back to her mother.
I would personally like to thank each and every one of them. They were caring, and concerned for my feelings also.  If you know and or see them please tell them Thanks.  A very happy ending.  Pictures on my Facebook page, Shana Gaines
