Bike Rides A Go Amid Coronavirus Crisis
BikeNewport is encouraging Rhode islanders to hit the pavement this spring — while safely social distancing, of course.

NEWPORT, RI — Warmer spring weather has arrived, usually bringing Easter egg hunts, trips to public parks and other outdoor activities. This year, as everyone knows by now, is different, with the new coronavirus forcing the closure of public areas and groups of five people or more banned until at least early May. Despite Rhode Islanders are still allowed to get outdoors, walking, playing and biking.
Bike Newport is encouraging all Rhode Island residents to roll out this spring, riding their bikes in their community as a way to get exercise and fresh air in an often stressful time.
Unlike some other sports and activities, it's easy to maintain at least 6 feet of separation while riding a bike, the organization said, offering several suggestions of how to do so safely at the present time, listed below.

- Always check the bike before riding. Complete a quick "ABC quick check," which includes the air, brakes, cogs, chain, crank and quick release. Make sure there's enough air in the tires, brakes are working and both pedals and gears are free of debris and working properly.
- Try fixing the bike yourself if it needs minor attention. Tutorials are available on Bike Newport's website for many common issues. Free tools and air are available at five "Fix-It Stations" in Newport: Bike Newport at 62 Broadway, the Gateway Visitors Center, Florence Gray Center, Thomson Middle School and AshMart.
- If you need a professional repair, call your local shop. Many are offering contact-free dropoff and pickup options.
- Always wear a helmet, and be careful when riding. "Please don’t risk any injury that will put demands on our strained medical system and caregivers," Bike Newport said. "Take extra precautions when riding, just like you take extra precautions with your distance - because you care about your community."
- Choose a route with plenty of room to ride. If the bike path is crowded, go elsewhere. Consider a ride through a less-popular area.
If you need a bike, some bike stores are offering curbside pickup for orders. The organization also has some bikes available, as well as a waiting list. Email size and bike style to allyson@bikenewportri.org to request one. Bike Newport is also accepting bike donations.
"Remember: Keep your distance and take it slow, biking will keep you active and feeling good. Now get out there and ride," the organization said.
