Bikers Stick Together For 7-Year-Old Hurt In Newport Accident Friday

The team is riding in Saturday's Bike to the Beach event and will donate all the proceeds for Jayden Rodriguez, 7, who was in an accident.

NEWPORT, RI— The Bike Newport team will donate for 7-year-old Jayden Rodriguez, who was critically injured Friday in an accident with a car. Jayden was riding his bicycle on Hillside Avenue around 3 p.m. Friday when, police said, he broadsided a moving vehicle. He was critically injured, according to Bari Freeman, of Bike Newport.

Jayden was rushed to Hasbro Children's Hospital by medical helicopter on Friday. His condition has not been reported. The hospital said today he is not listed as a patient. There is no word on whether he was released or transferred to another facility.

The national organization Bike to the Beach, which raises funds for Autism Awareness and has partnered with Bike Newport for the past five years, is on board with the decision to help the Rodriguez family.

The organizers see the chance for this ride – happening in just a few days - to give Bike Newport a way to quickly raise awareness and funds for little Jayden, Bike Newport said.

“We’re happy to support this decision by Bike Newport,” shared Bike to the Beach Executive Director, Robby Walsh, “and we encourage everyone in the community to get behind the effort and show Jayden the love and support that is so present for him.”
