MLK Community Center Hosts Family Luau

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center in Newport, RI recently hosted a family Luau as part of its Healthy Family Dinner series.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center in Newport, RI hosted a family Luau as part of its Healthy Family Dinner series. Highlighted by colorful leis, a limbo contest and tropical-themed cuisine, the event followed previous formats with a nutritious, simple menu of affordable food, and a focus on meal time as an opportunity for togetherness and communication to build healthy bodies and families.

Food for the luau was provided by a combination of anonymous donors and reserves from the MLK Center’s food pantry. Also present at the event was a Portsmouth High School student whose senior project food drive raised over 100 pounds of non-perishables for the center.

Food and clothing donations are always appreciated at the center, but financial contributions are what keep the building warm and the lights running while allowing the team to create and operate educational and community focused programs like the Healthy Family Dinner series.
