A Murphy bed, also called a wall bed, pull down bed or fold-down bed is a bed that is hinged at one end to store vertically against the wall, or inside of a closet or cabinet.  This unique interior design feature is named after Mr. William Lawrence Murphy, who developed this innovative concept with romance in mind.  According to legend, William was wooing an opera singer while living in a one-room apartment in San Francisco. The moral code of the time frowned upon a woman entering a man’s bedroom. Hence Murphy’s invention converted his bedroom into a parlor, enabling him to entertain. Very sneaky indeed!Â
In modern times, Murphy beds are used for space-saving purposes, much like trundle beds, and are popular where floor space is limited, such as small homes, apartments, mobile homes and college dormitories.
