Newport Classical's Chamber Series opens this fall with returning favorites Invoke, a multi-instrumental quartet encompassing traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism, that Strings Magazine reports “cannot be contained by any one label.” Marking the nation's 250th anniversary, their program "American Voices" spotlights influential American composers including William Grant Still, Florence Price, and Duke Ellington alongside original works by the ensemble.

Newport Classical presents its sixth full-season Chamber Series held on select Fridays at 7:30pm, featuring twelve concerts held between September 2026 and June 2027, at the organization's home venue, Newport Classical Recital Hall. The Chamber Series reaffirms Newport Classical's commitment to year-round classical music programming. Audiences are invited to enjoy performances by world-class classical musicians in a relaxed setting, with complimentary wine generously provided by Gold's Wine and Spirits served during intermission.Admission: $45-62

for this engaging author talk with Keith Tavares for his recently 
published book, "An Azorean Family's History," which is both story of 
genealogical research and the history of his Azorean roots both on the 
Island of Faial and then here in the U.S.
About the Author:
Keith Tavares began collecting names, dates, photos, and stories 
about his family when he was a boy, and as genealogical technology 
advanced, so did his research.&nbsp; The result of his research is his new 
book “An Azorean Family’s History : Our Faria and Moitoso Roots.”&nbsp; 
Tavares’ journey explored his ancestors, unearthing the rich history and
 legacy that has shaped his family. His research prompted him to travel 
abroad to mainland Portugal, the Island of Madeira, and the Azores, 
specifically the islands of Sao Miguel and Faial, and helped him 
understand why his ancestors left their homeland for new opportunities 
in the US.
A resident of Newport, Rhode Island, where he was born in the Naval 
Hospital, Keith is a graduate of Boston University, where he majored in 
political science and history. He has worked in higher education and the
 nonprofit sector for most of 30 years, having served as Vice President 
of Institutional Advancement for the large social service agency Child 
and Family in Newport and Middletown, RI. He currently serves as 
Director of Capacity Building for the Rhode Island Foundation in 
Providence, RI, supporting nonprofit organizations throughout the state.

TALK OVERVIEW: The sonic presence of bagpipes has become a ubiquitous and necessary aspect of line-of-duty funerals and 9/11 memorials, much like “Taps” in military ceremonies honoring fallen soldiers. But the direct line between Irish or Scottish musical traditions and recently invented traditions for those in public service is blurry or imagined. This presentation will discuss areas in which the porous nature of Irish or Celtic identity – especially in musical settings – allows for a personal identification with the performed identity of a bagpipe band, regardless of one’s ethnicity or heritage, in moments of ceremony, memorialization, and pageantry. With an eye to the material (bagpipes, kilts, balmorals) and an ear to the sonic spectacle (drone, marches, drums), this discussion will explore the changing nature of identity in this musical performance. The results will include a new perspective on how public traditions form and become vital to different groups of people; the role of performance in assembling and demonstrating heritage; and the importance of sonic spectacle in performing ethnicity and identity.
GUEST SPEAKER BIO: Dr. Scott Spencer is an Assistant Professor of Musicology (World Music) at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, and a Fellow in the USC Society of Fellows in the Humanities. His latest book, Pipers for the Fallen: The NYPD Emerald Society Bagpipe Band, will be published in the Oxford University Press “American Musicspheres” series in the near future. This is Dr. Spencer's second talk for the Museum.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM-Celebrating 30 years The Museum of Newport Irish History,
 a volunteer-driven, non-profit 501c3 organization, was founded in 1996 
and now boasts over 900 members. In addition to operating an <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Interpretive Center</a>
 on Lower Thames Street, the organization sponsors numerous educational,
 cultural, social, and fundraising events throughout the year, including
 its popular <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/lectures/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Annual Lecture Series</a>, now in its 25th season. The 
organization also restored and maintains the historic <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/historic-cemetery-tours/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Barney Street Cemetery</a>
 at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets, steps from Washington 
Square. It is the final resting place of many of Newport’s earliest 
Irish residents. The cemetery was established to support Rhode 
Island’s first Roman Catholic parish, the forerunner of the current 
Saint Mary’s Church at the corner of Spring Street and Memorial 
Boulevard.

The Jamestown Chapter of Little Dresses for Africa will meet on Thursday, September 24, from 1-3 pm at Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Avenue. Sewing skills are helpful, but not necessary to turn pillowcases into dresses with simple patterns and directions. Machines, materials and guidance are provided.&nbsp;The non-profit Little Dresses for Africa, which has&nbsp;chapters in 97 countries, distributes dresses&nbsp;for&nbsp;little girls in need in Africa, Honduras, Haiti, and Guatemala. Since its founding 20 years ago, Little Dresses for Africa&nbsp;has distributed more than 8 million dresses sewn by volunteers around the world. The Jamestown Chapter meets on the last Thursday of the month, 1-3 pm at Central Baptist Church, Jamestown. For information (or just come!), call (401) 744-0345.
