NEWPORT, RI — Several miles of roads in downtown Newport will go car-free on Sunday for the "Elliot's Ride For Everyone" event. All of Hazard Road and two miles of Ocean Avenue will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., allowing bikers and pedestrians to take to the streets.

This is the first year of the event, which is sponsored by Bike Newport. The event is named for Elliot Kaminitz, an avid biker died while biking along Memorial Boulevard in Newport in 2012.

"I am excited to see families enjoying this stunning section of the Ocean Drive, when biking and walking are honored and elevated, so that we all may pursue our path in our own way, in our own time - and feeling free to be distracted by the sheer beauty of our surroundings!" said Susan Taylor, Newport’s Vice Mayor.

Police will be stationed along the route to help divert traffic and assist bikers and walkers, as well as Bike Newport volunteers to help with bike checks, helmet fittings and, if needed, minor repairs. The event is free to attend and restrooms will be available along the route.

The ride begins at Rogers High School on Wickham Road, where route information and refreshments will be available. Participants can join the ride at any point along the route, including the two end points on the Ocean Loop at Harrison Avenue and Carroll Avenue.
