NEWPORT, RI — Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, but parking fees will still apply at Easton's Beach in Newport.

Parking enforcement will continue until Oct. 31, the city announced in a statement Thursday. Capacity will remained limited in lots to help reduce crowding on the beach, and visitors are asked to wear masks where social distancing is not possible and to use self-pay kiosks for parking.

Although there will be no lifeguards on duty starting Sept. 8, restrooms and the snack bar will remain open and operational until Columbus Day weekend.

The city called the summer season "a definite success," despite the issues posed by the pandemic, with parking lots frequently filling to capacity and visitors overwhelmingly following safety protocols.

Seasonal parking passes are still available to Newport residents for $50 each, or $30 for those 65 years and older. Applications are available on the city's website, and must be returned with a copy of a valid driver's license and current vehicle registration, including expiration date. Mail the application with payment to the Martin Recreation Center at 35 Golden Hill Street, Newport, R.I. 02840. Stickers will be issued via mail only.
