Amorita’s Unlucky Day Film Premiere, June 26, 2012
An original film, directed by Pierre Marcel recounts the history, dramatic sinking and resurrection of a classic 107-year-old Herreshoff yacht in Newport, RI
Launched in1905, Amorita, was one of eighteen NY-30 class racing yachts turned out by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. By 2007, she’d already celebrated her 100th birthday and her history was replete with sailors who went to extraordinary lengths to care for her. She was an iconic fixture of Newport harbor and one of the most admired and photographed yachts in the world. Until it happened… on July 7, 2007 while racing in Narragansett Bay, she was run down and sunk by a yacht nearly twice her size. News of the tragedy came to the attention of award-winning film director/producer, Pierre Marcel (Tabarly, 2009) who, after meeting with Amorita’s owners, Jed Pearsall and Bill Doyle was convinced that there was a compelling story that had to be told. He set out to create a film about this truly unique vessel that had captured the hearts and imagination of sailors and non-sailors for more than a century.

The film, 07.07.07 Amorita’s Unlucky Day will première in Newport at the Jane Pickens Theater on Thursday, June 26, 2012. The event, a benefit for Sail Newport and the Jane Pickens Theater Restoration Fund, will kick-off with a pre-show reception at 6:30pm, followed by the screening at 7:00pm (60 mins.), and post-show Q&A with director, Pierre Marcel. This is one showing only and expected to sell out. Advanced ticket purchases are strongly suggested.
