Family of Newport Fire Victim Starts Fundraising Campaign

Maria Macedo lost everything in the fire on Catherine Street on Friday.

The fire on Catherine Street in Newport on Friday damaged a multi-family home at the same time it turned the many of the possessions belonging to the 14 displaced residents to ashes, or damaged them from smoke and water.

One of those people is Maria Macedo, a single mother of four and grandmother of eight who is very distraught, according to her daughter, Stephanie Macedo-Silva.

“My mother is a very strong independent woman, who has always provided for her family the best way she knew how all on her own. She is a hard working mother who gives her all,” Macedo-Silva said. “My mother and nieces have lost everything. Anyone who knows my mother knows she can be stubborn and don’t ask for help, well i’m asking help for her.”

Macedo-Silva created a GoFundMe page to raise money to help her mother out. She said she lives in West Virginia and can’t be there to console her mother in person.

“I feel helpless,” she said. “But if I can ease her mind and limit some things that can cause a lot of stress for her, I’m gonna do it.”
