First Annual Bloomsday Announced in Newport
The Newport Celtic Players have spearheaded an effort to bring the event to the City-by-the-Sea on June 16.
Bloomsday is inspired by the novel, “Ulysses” written by Irish writer James Joyce which chronicles the events of one day, June 16, 1904, in the life of Leopold Bloom. Bloomsday events happen all over the world in various ways; whether reading selected excepts or marathon readings of the entire book, each June 16th somewhere there is tribute to this epic and renowned work of literature.
Michael Healy, Tony Gutierrez and Brian Sullivan (aka Dr. Love) have been kicking around the idea of a Bloomsday for several years (Mike has seen several Bloomsdays in New York) and happily the timing was right for this year. Tony has a theatre background and both he and Brian are veritable Joyce aficionados.
