Five Fun Things to Do in Newport County on Saturday

The Potter League's Crafts Show; Holiday Open House at the Redwood; a Ballard Park hike; a holiday arts market in Jamestown & Cajun Dancing.

NEWPORT, RI—Looking for something to do in Newport on Saturday. Besides shopping and ice skating, here are a few best picks.

1. Potter League Craft Show

Here's a way to enjoy the holiday shopping and help a good cause. The Artisan Craft Fair contributes all the entry fees to help the animals at the Potter League. Support the show and help out your favorites pets in need of forever homes.

The sale is on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Potter League in Middletown, on Oliphant Lane (across from the Stop & Shop and Benny's).

According to the Potter League, the sale is the place to find holiday gifts made locally including pottery, soaps and lotions, doll clothes, ornaments, blankets, baby gifts, photography, edible gifts and more. All crafters' entry fees will be donated to the Potter League. Each crafter will be donating an item to add to two gift baskets that will each be raffled off at the end of the day.

2. Guided Hike at Ballard Park

Friends of Ballard Park is hosting a guided hike on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 2 p.m. to 3. Staff from Friends of Ballard Park will share information about the site’s history and its unique features, including a vernal pond, quarry meadow and woodland forest.

Ballard Park is located on the corner of Hazard and Wickham Roads. Event goers should meet at the Hazard Road entrance. For GPS: use 1 Oceans Heights Road, Newport. Wear sturdy shoes as trails are uneven and steep in areas. Suggested donation is $5. Rain Date December 11th.

3. Holiday Open House at Redwood Library

Bump into Santa when you step through the Redwood's doors on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Holiday Open House. "This festive event will feature live Christmas carols, special tours, a seasonal exhibition of vintage Christmas books, a children's craft, refreshments. All visitors will have a chance at winning special raffle prizes. The Open House is a great opportunity for members and the public to learn more about the Library's history, its collections, and its vibrant programming," the Redwood says.

4. Cajun Dance at Sandywoods, Tiverton

The Magnolia Cajun Band is at Sandywoods this Saturday, Dec. 10. Since 1989, Magnolia has been New England's hometown Cajun band. Doors open at 7 p.m. Dance lesson is at 7:30; concert at 8 p.m. at Sandywoods Center for the Arts, 43 Muse Way, Tiverton. Tickets are $15 at the door and $12 in advance (available from Brown Paper Tickets). It's BYOB and BYOF.

5. Jamestown Holiday Arts Market, Jamestown

Local artists present their wares in a curated holiday arts sale. The location is at the Jamestown Arts Center, at 18 Valley St., near the Jamestown Philomenian Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
