Free Parking In Newport Ends May 1

NEWPORT, RI — Starting Wednesday, parking rates will once again be enforced in Newport. Patch is here to help with a full guide to parking in the City by the Sea.

On-street, metered parking is available on streets throughout downtown Newport and on Memorial Boulevard near Easton's Beach. Downtown street parking costs $1.25 per hour, up to three hours, while Memorial Boulevard spots cost $2 per hour.

A multi-space parking meter is located on Narragansett Avenue for the Cliff Walk, near the Forty Steps restroom. Parking costs $1.25 per hour, with a maximum of four hours. To pay for parking, enter the license plate number into the meter and deposit payment into the machine. Credit cards, coins or dollars are accepted. Drivers do not need to go back to their car to place their receipt on their dashboard.

Aside from street parking, there are five city-sponsored parking lots throughout the downtown area. They are:

  • Gateway Parking Lot
    • Located on America's Cup Ave. behind Discover Newport
    • Accessible from America's Cup Avenue or Bolhouse Road
    • Parking rates: $2.00 for the first half hour, $1.50 for each subsequent half hour, up to a daily maximum of $24.50
  • Mary Street
    • Accessible from Mary St. via Thames St. or from Church St. via Spring St.
    • Self-Pay parking lot, pay at the station and place the receipt on your dashboard
    • Parking rates: $3.00 per hour, $20 per day (until 2 a.m. the next day), $30 overnight (until 9 a.m. the next day)
    • Residents with a sticker can park for free once per day, up to three hours
  • Touro Street
    • Entrance is on Clarke St. via Touro St.
    • Multi-space parking meter
    • Parking rates: $1.25 per hour
  • Long Wharf
    • Located on Long Wharf adjacent to Newport Yacht Club
    • Multi-space parking meter
    • Parking rates: $1.25 per hour
  • King Park
    • Located on Wellington Avenue
    • Permits are required for parking vehicles and boat trailers and can be purchased at Newport City Hall. Automobile permits cost $50 per season and boat trailer permits cost $25 per season for Newport residents and $100 for non-residents

Curbside parking is only available to those with resident stickers, visitor passes or temporary permits. Signs are posted on streets with restricted parking, which either applies to overnight hours from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., all hours or daytime restrictions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. More details on parking restrictions are available in the city's parking ordinances.
