Historic District Commission Nixes Salve Regina Dorm Expansion

The proposed dorms would house 200 students each. The commission deemed the plans to be too "out of character" for the historic area.

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Newport's Historic District Commission voted Wednesday night to deny Salve Regina University's plan for new dormitories. The planned dormitory would house 200 students and would be located west of Lawrence Avenue, between Shepard and Victoria Avenue.

According to NewportRI.com, the commission voted 4-2 to deny a "certificate of appropriateness" to "Building A," also called the Watts Dormitory. The majority of the commission felt that the proposed dormitory was too large and not fitting with the historic character of the Ochre Point-Cliffs District.

The second proposed dormitory, called "Building B" or the Wallace Dormitory, will be voted on separately by the commission because it is on a different, nearby parcel of land near the already-existing Wallace Hall.
