Lady Vikings Win Basketball Opener

Rogers wins big against Central Falls.

Lady Vikings (1-0) were victorious in their home opener against the Central Falls Lady Warriors (0-1) 48-21 on Friday night.

From the opening tip, Rogers was able to take control immediately by going on an 18-3 run, which put Central Falls into a hole they would be unable to dig themselves out of.

In fact, the Lady Vikings only allowed three field goals in the entire first half en route to jumping out to a 24-8 halftime lead.

Even though Rogers had won by such a wide margin, they had played sloppy at times in both halves of this contest. For the game, the Lady Vikings committed 14 turnovers.

"We were indeed sloppy and I do not think we played very well," Rogers Head Coach Frank Brow said. "In addition, our transition defense could have been much better."

Sienna Benson paced the Lady Vikings scoring attack with 20 points, which included four three-pointers. She also dished out four assists.

"Sienna is in her second year with us, and she has proven to us already that she is a great player," Brow said. "We are excited to see what she does for us this year."

With seven minutes remaining in the second half, the Lady Vikings led comfortably 34-17. However, Benson along with Tia Cromwell and Chanel Neal all had managed to hit a few driving lay-ups, which helped Rogers score and close the game out on a 14-3 run.

For the game, Neal and Brianne Morgera each chipped in with 10 and eight points, respectively, while Cromwell also added four points.

Rogers also shot well from the behind the arc, hitting 5-7 for the game. In the second half, Benson contributed with four three-pointers.

Now that Rogers has their home opener in the books, they are going to prepare for their next opponent, North Kingstown, in a non-divisional game on the road next Friday evening.

"There are so many things that we need to work on if we are going to get any better," Brow said. "However, I am happy that we were able to pull out the win."
