Let's Get Down... Bayou Style!

Each Wednesday evening, experience the wildly entertaining world of Cajun and Zydeco dancing! Instructor Jody Rudnick leads a Beginner Cajun dance class at 7:00pm, followed by Beginner Zydeco at 8:00pm. Build a basic knowledge of these wonderful dance styles in advance of our April 13 Cajun/Zydeco Workshop and Dance Party; not to mention the upcoming festival season!

Dominated by musical instruments such as the accordion, triangle and fiddle, Cajun music has influenced Rhythm & Blues, Country, Swamp Pop and even Rock ‘n Roll. Depending on the tempo, Cajun may be danced to with a waltz, two-step, or jitterbug. Different styles of each dance originate from places like Mamou, LA and are very popular in the dance community as well.

Zydeco is dance music historically played by Creole French speaking people of African descent from the prairies of Southwest Louisiana.  Its core is the sound of an accordion paired with the scrapping of a rub board and draws on pop music sources like Funk, Soul, Blues, R&B and even Reggae. The steps performed to Zydeco music look like swing dancing to those unfamiliar with it. Zydeco dancing is intensely passionate and sexy, and many are heralding it as "the new salsa."
