A "Lot" of Parking Just Opened in Newport

The Touro Parking Lot is now open after a repair project.

The Touro Parking Lot is now open after a repair project that began in November has been completed.

The lot officially reopened on Dec. 15, less than two months after Hartford Paving Company began the repair project.

Repairs were necessitated by the failure of the lot’s subbase. The result were sinkholes and ”other depressions throughout the lot,” the city said in a release.

The city’s Dept. of Public Services worked with D’Amico Engineering Technology, Inc., to study the drainage and subsurface of the lot, paving the way for a new design. Drainage and water quality improvements were made and now, the lot “maximizes parking for residents, visitors and persons with disabilities,” the city said.

Parking in the lot is free right now, but the Touro Parking Lot becomes a pay-and-display lot come May 1.
