The U.S. Naval War College in Newport welcomed Lewis M. Duncan today as he began his new job as the college’s chief academic officer.
Duncan comes to NWC after serving as president of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., since 2004.
Prior to that, Duncan was dean of engineering and professor of engineering sciences at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.

He received his B.A. (1973) in physics and mathematics, and M.A. (1976) and Ph.D. (1977) in space physics, all from Rice University, Houston, Texas.
Duncan has an accomplished career, including international acclaim for his work in experimental space physics.

He currently chairs the Board of Directors of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, which is responsible for managing the U.S. National Laboratory on the International Space Station.
He is also frequently consulted for his expertise on international security, counterterrorism and technology-based learning.
As President of Rollins College, Duncan has secured its position as one of the top schools in the south. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the school as the No. 1 university in the south in its Carnegie classification.
