Nelson Resigns as Rogers Principal

In his resignation letter, Principal James Nelson said he is proud of what he has accomplished during his tenure.

The principal of Rogers High School, James Nelson, has submitted his resignation.

Nelson, whose contract wasn’t up for renewal until 2015, submitted a letter of resignation on Tuesday, writing that he was proud of what has been accomplished at the school during his tenure and “believes Rogers High School is well positioned in the future.”

Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain announced Nelson’s resignation at Tuesday’s School Committee meeting and said that while most personnel actions aren’t disclosed during meetings, she wanted to let the community know and thank Mr. Nelson for his dedication to Newport and Rogers High School.

“I did not have the opportunity to work for a long time with Mr. Nelson,” Jermain said. “He is a fine man and we appreciate all his efforts and all he has done for the high school.”

Jermain said she did not want to reveal anything about Nelson’s future plans, since they aren’t finalized. But Nelson did indicate that he was interested in the staff and school community knowing “so we can move forward,” Jermain said.

Jermain said the next step will be to determine who should be interim principal as soon as possible, leading up to a new principal search.

Jermain said that parents and teachers will help participate in that search.

Nelson’s official last day of work is Aug. 26. He offered assistance during the transition period.
