NEWPORT, RI -- Newport architect Glenn Gardiner is helping the American Cancer Society make a statement about breast cancer.

He's supporting the upcoming walk on Sunday, Oct. 16 as one of the "Real Men Wear Pink" volunteers.

According to Ellen Schulte, of the cancer society, Gardiner has agreed to wear pink against breast cancer every day this October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“I’m a cancer survivor myself and many members of my family have had cancer in some form or another,” said Gardiner. “So I am empathetic to the cause, to the people experiencing the disruption cancer causes in their lives, and I appreciate the focused effort needed to fight cancer. The support of the local community is critical to that fight.”

This is the inaugural campaign for Real Men Wear Pink, Schulte added.

So, if Gardiner asks you for money for cancer research, don't be surprised.

“Not only have they been asked to wear pink every day in October to raise awareness about breast cancer issues, but these men also will be raising critical funds to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from breast cancer,” said Kelsey Newton, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Providence community manager. “Funds raised allow the Society to be there for those touched by breast cancer, from research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, the Society provides support to everyone impacted by the disease. Every action we take moves us one step closer to a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer.”

The society estimates some 120 Rhode Island women will die from breast cancer this year.

Other Real Men are Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia and University of Rhode Island men's basketball Coach Dan Hurley.
