Newport Fire: Crews Respond to 32 Bacheller Street
The first alarm was struck around 11:48 a.m.

NEWPORT, RI — Crews responded to 32 Bacheller St. on Saturday. The initial call was for an attic fire around 11:48 a.m. The street is between Spring and Thames around the corner from Wellington.
Everyone made it out safely, Capt. Don Gunning said, and the fire marshal is still investigating the cause. The fire started in the ceiling of a second floor bathroom. It was under control at 12:50 p.m.
Middletown provided station coverage. Newport sent about 30 firefighters to the scene, he said, meaning everyone on duty and an additional shift responded. The crews had to cut a hole in the roof to vent the fire, so the firefighters inside the house could reach it and put it out.

"It was a very hot day," Capt. Gunning said, and the heat and muggy weather made the conditions a little difficult. "The guys did a good job."
