Newport Fire Department Puts Out Thames Street Fire In One Hour
Deputy Fire Chief Drew Elder heard the alarm sound a few minutes after 3 p.m. and said the fire was mostly under control in minutes.

NEWPORT, RI — It took the Fire Department just one hour on scene to put out a fire on the third floor at 282 Thames Street yesterday afternoon.
Deputy Fire Chief Drew Elder heard the alarm sound a few minutes after 3 p.m., lead a quick response, and said the fire was mostly under control within minutes.
According to Elder, the fire started from welding and soldering work. The Thames Street property is under construction as a new restaurant is expected to open there soon.

"We took care of it, got a ladder up," Elder said. "(We) Hit with a dry chemical extinguisher from outside and got it inside from the attic."
No injuries were reported.
