Newport Firefighter Fired After DUI Charge In Death of RI Teen

Former Newport firefighter Alexander Krajewski, 30, is facing DUI charges after a crash that killed Matthew Dennison, 17.

NEWPORT, RI — Newport city officials fired a firefighter who was charged with drunken driving in an Exeter crash that killed one teen and seriously injured another.

Newport Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitiano confirmed the termination on Friday of Alexander Krajewski, 30, of North Kingstown, NBC 10 reported.

Krajewksi was charged with DUI of liquor or drugs resulting in death, driving to endanger with death resulting, DUI liquor or drugs resulting in serious bodily injury and driving so as to endanger personal injury resulting.

The head-on crash happened on Route 165 in Exeter on Feb. 12 and seriously injured two hockey players from West Warwick High School. One of the teens, Matthew Dennison, 17, later died at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, officials said.

The other teen, Kevin MacDonald, has since been released from the hospital.
