Newport Hospital Makes USA Today's Best Hospitals List

Newport Hospital, along with Miriam Hospital in Providence, were rated the best in the Rhode Island and Providence metro area.

Newport Hospital has earned distinction from USA Today in the newspaper’s annual ranking of American hospitals.

The 124-bed hospital was ranked No. 1 in Rhode Island in a tie with Miriam Hospital in Providence.

No other hospital in Rhode Island scored enough points to get ranked in the annual survey.

In a summary, USA Today said that Newport Hospital is a regionally ranked hospital and is tops in Rhode Island and the Providence metro area. It was also rated “high performing” in two areas of adult care: chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease, or COPD, and heart failure.

Survey data showed that 30,913 patients visited the emergency room and a total of 4,589 patients were admitted. Physicians performed 1,446 inpatient and 4,744 outpatient surgeries.

USA Today sifted through data for nearly 5,000 hospitals and results from surveys of more than 140,000 physicians to come up with the rankings.

Death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation were a few of factors considered. Only 137 hospitals were nationally ranked in a specialty.

USA Today counted 16 hospitals in Rhode Island.

Also noteworthy is data regarding infections at Rhode Island Hospital. The rankings show that the frequency of hospital-acquired infections in many procedures was “significantly worse than expected.”
