Newport Man Found Asleep in Parked Cadillac after Accident

He was charged with disorderly conduct after fighting with firefighters and hospital staff trying to treat him for intoxication.

A 48-year-old Admiral Kalbfus Road man found asleep in his parked car Thursday morning was arrested for disorderly conduct after he allegedly kicked and swore at Newport Hospital workers trying to treat him for severe intoxication.

Police said that Howard Ray was found asleep in the driver’s seat of his Cadillac after officers were dispatched to 36 Chapel Terrace for a report of a motor vehicle accident that occured sometime overnight.

Police said next to Ray’s car was a 2005 Chrysler that showed signs of damage from being struck by his Cadillac, apparently from when he parked his car. The owner of the Chrysler told police that his vehicle had no damage when he last saw it the day before.

Ray’s car was cold to the touch and it appeared that he had been asleep for some time, having vomited and soiled his clothing.

It took several attempts before Ray woke up and his intoxicated state compelled police to transport him to Newport Hospital, police said.

Once there, police said Ray became combative with members of the Newport Fire Department and began to struggle with them as he demanded to know why he was under arrest.

He then began kicking and yelling when staff tried to remove his soiled clothing and multiple members of security staff had to step in. Eventually, Ray was handcuffed and brought to the police station and held as he sobered up. A few hours later, police said he said he had no recollection of being arrested and was released with a summons to appear in District Court on April 29.
