Newport Man In Mobility Scooter Struck By Pickup Dies

The force of the collision propelled the mobility scooter about 30 feet, police said.

NEWPORT, RI — The Newport man struck by a pickup truck while operating a mobility scooter has died.

John Miles was hit by a Toyota Tacoma at the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Chapel Street about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The force of the collision propelled the mobility scooter about 30 feet, the Newport Police Department said in a media release.

The driver of the Tacoma, Jose Monterroso Villagran, 47, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of liquor or drugs resulting in serious bodily injury and driving under the influence of liquor or drugs.

Following Miles' death, the charges were to be upgraded to DUI of liquor or drugs resulting in death, according to police.
