Newport Man One Of 15 State Police DUI Arrests

State police said they were called to I-95 because of a hit-and-run crash on I-95 in Providence.

NEWPORT, RI — A Newport man was one of 15 arrested over Columbus Day weekend by state police on driving under the influence charges (DUI).

Santos Hernandez Estrada, age 19 was arrested after a hit-and-run crash on I-95 in Providence, police said. Police said they were called about the crash on Monday at about 9:45 p.m. No one in the crash was seriously injured.

"Anyone who chooses to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs poses a tremendous risk to everyone on our roads," State Police Colonel Assumpico said in a press statement addressing the 15 DUI arrests over the weekend. "We are fortunate that no deaths or serious injuries resulted from the alleged actions of these individuals."

Charges for Estrada include:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol/ and or drugs with an unknown blood alcohol level
  • Refusing to submit to a chemical test
  • Driving with an expired license
  • Leaving the scene of an accident

Estrada was also cited for failing to file an accident report, failing to drive at a reasonable speed, driving without car insurance, transporting alcohol as a minor and being in the presence of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle.
