Newport Mansions: The Breakers Closing, Marble House Back Open

NEWPORT, RI — Changes are coming to the Newport Mansions starting March 1. One mansion will be closing to the public, while another will reopen for the first time in nearly a year.

Marble House has been closed since March 15, 2020, when all The Preservation Society of Newport County properties were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will reopen March 1, and will be the only property open to the public until April 16.

"For most of the past year, many people have been asking when we will reopen Marble House," said Trudy Coxe, the preservation society's CEO and executive director. "We are excited to welcome people back to this spectacular house and share its fascinating history. That is the purpose behind our preservation efforts."

The Breakers, which has been open to the public for several months, will close until May 28, the Friday before Memorial Day. Depending on the state of the pandemic, other houses may reopen to the public over the summer.

On April 16, Green Animals Topiary Garden is scheduled to reopen. The Preservation Society will again offer the "stroll the gardens and grounds" package, which allows visitors access to all outdoor properties and grounds, including picnicking on the lawn.

Looking ahead, Holidays at The Newport Mansions will kick off Nov. 20 and run through Jan. 2, 2022. After the success of the last holiday season, the outdoor sparkling lights display will again be featured at The Breakers.

Here's a look at the operating schedule for the rest of the year.

• March 1 – April 15: Marble House open daily at 10 a.m., last tour admission 4 p.m. House and grounds close 5 p.m.
• April 16 – May 27: Marble House and Green Animals Topiary Garden open daily at 10 a.m., last tour admission 4 p.m. House and grounds close 5 p.m.
• May 28 – Sept. 6 (Labor Day): The Breakers, Marble House and Green Animals open daily at 10 a.m., last tour admission 5 p.m. House and grounds close 6 p.m.
• Sept. 7 – Oct. 31: The Breakers, The Elms and Green Animals open daily at 10 a.m., last tour admission 5 p.m. House and grounds close 6 p.m.
• Nov. 1 – Jan. 2, 2022: The Breakers and The Elms open daily at 10 a.m., last tour admission 4 p.m. House and grounds close 5 p.m.
• Holidays at the Newport Mansions: Nov. 20 – Jan. 2, 2022: Open at 10 a.m., last tour admission 4 p.m. House and grounds close 5 p.m. Sparkling Lights: An Outdoor Magical Wonderland returns to The Breakers. Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
