Newport Recreation Fall Leagues Roundup

A look at what's being offered for youth and adults.

The Newport Recreation Department has announced its adults and youth sports leagues for the fall. Registration can be done at the recreation office, located at 35 Golden Hill Street in Newport. There will be a $5 late charge after the advertised deadline. Some programs will fill before the deadline.

ADULT TENNIS TOURNAMENTS

The Newport Recreation Department will be holding five different adult tennis tournaments this fall.

All tournaments will be played at the Pop Flack courts. Players will need to register the Thursday before each tournament.

Cost of registration will be $15 per person, $30 per team for doubles.

ADULT TENNIS LESSONS

The Newport Recreation Department will be offering two different adult tennis lessons this fall. All classes will be held at the Rogers High School Tennis Courts.

Cost of registration is $60 for residents of Newport and $75 for nonresidents. Classes begin the weekend of September 11 and 12, and end on the weekend of October 16 and 17.

The beginner class will be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; and on Sundays from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The intermediate class will be held on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon; and on Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

ADULT TENNIS LEAGUES

There will be two different tennis leagues for adults this fall.

The Women's Doubles league will be held at Vernon Park on Sundays at 1 p.m. It begins on September 12.

The Combo Team Tennis League also will be held at Vernon Park on Saturdays at 9 a.m. It begins on September 11. All players must be USTA members and must be between a 3.0 to 3.5 level. Players can either register as an individual or team member. 

Cost of registration for both leagues is $30 per person.

FOREVER 45 FIT AND FUN SPORTS SAMPLER

There will be a variety of traditional and non-traditional sports for adults over the age of 45. Possible sports include basketball, small-sided soccer, wiffle ball and non-contact football.

Cost of registration will be $25 for residents of Newport, and $35 for nonresidents.

The program will be run from September 19 to October 17 at Braga Park, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sundays.

STROLLER STRIDES

Stroller Strides is a total fitness program for new moms and their babies.  It includes power walking and intervals of body toning using exercise tubing and the stroller. This combination enables the mom to get an all-over body workout.

Cost of registration will be $75 for six weeks.

Stroller Strides begins on September 8  and will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9 a.m. The instructor will be Abby Rowe.

 

YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUES 

There are three different soccer leagues being offered to youth this fall. All three leagues run from mid-September (tentatively September 11) to late October.

The deadline to register is September 9. Some divisions may fill prior to the deadline. All abilities are welcome, and every player receives a ball and a t-shirt. Shin guards are required to play.

Pee Wee Soccer League

The Pee Wee league is for all children ages 4 and 5, or for boys and girls entering kindergarten this fall.

The games will be played at Braga Park on Saturday mornings. The cost of registration is $35 for residents of Newport, and $45 for nonresidents.

Rookies Soccer League

The Rookies league is for all children in 1st and 2nd grade this fall. The cost of registration is $45 for residents of Newport, and $55 for nonresidents.

Intermediates Soccer League

The Intermediates league is for all children in 3rd and 4th grade this fall.

The games are held at Braga Park, on Saturday mornings; and at Toppa Field on Thursday evenings.

The cost of registration is $45 for residents of Newport, and $55 for nonresidents.

FALL BASEBALL

There will be two fall baseball leagues for youth this fall. Both leagues will run on Sundays, from September 19 to October 17. 

Cost of registration is $25 for residents of Newport, and $35 for nonresidents. The deadline to register is September 9, but leagues may fill prior to the deadline.

Beginner Baseball Clinic

The Beginner Clinic is for all children who are 6 and 7 years old. Players will learn hitting, throwing, catching, fielding and base-running in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The clinic will be run at Braga Park on Sundays, from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Sandlot Baseball

The Sandlot league is for all children between the ages of 7 and 9 years old. The games are designed to have maximum at bats, with skill development in base-running, throwing and fielding. Also, players will play a different position each inning.

Games will be at Braga Park on Sundays, from noon to 1:30 p.m. 

WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIGHTS FOOTBALL

Wednesday Night Lights is a small sided, touch football league, which will be held under the lights at Toppa Field. The league is for all children from grades 4 to 8. There will be two divisions, depending on grade levels. Cost of registration is $25 for residents of Newport, $35 for nonresidents. It is limited to the first 40 registrants.

TENNIS LESSONS

There will two different youth tennis lessons this fall. One class will be for beginners and the other class will be for advanced players. All classes will be held at the Rogers High School Tennis courts. Classes begin the weekend of September 11 and 12, and end the weekend of October 16 and 17. Cost of registration will be $40 for residents of Newport, and $50 for nonresidents.

Beginners

The beginner lessons will be offered to all children between the ages of 4 and 12. There will be two classes on Saturdays: one from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and the other from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be two classes offered on Sundays: one from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the other from 11 a.m. to noon.

Advanced

The advanced level classes will be offered to all children, advanced in tennis, between the ages of 10 and 12, or any child older than the age of 12. There will be one class offered on Saturdays from noon to 1 p.m., and one class offered on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

ZUMBATOMICS

There will be a Zumba program for all children between the ages of 6 and 12. Classes will be held at The Hut on Wednesdays from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will begin September 22 and will run until October 27. Cost of registration is $15 for residents of Newport, and $20 for nonresidents.
