Newport Rep. Named Legislator Of The Year By Rural Jobs Coalition

NEWPORT, RI — A Newport representative was named Legislator of the Year by the Rural Jobs Coalition at the National Conference of State Legislators last month. Rep. Marvin Abney was recognized for his work in creating Economic Opportunity Zones in Rhode Island.

"It was an incredible honor to be recognized with this award. I believe economic opportunity zones have the ability to transform Rhode Island in positive and sustainable ways and I am eager for the communities of our state to take advantage of this program to ensure future success," Rep. Abney said.

The Legislator of the Year Award goes to a representative or senator who show great support for their communities and small businesses within them. Abney was chosen for this year's award for his role in creating greater economic opportunities in the state, allowing small businesses to flourish and creating new jobs.

The Opportunity Zones program is designed to boost economic development in certain communities. It is a federal program, giving tax incentives to private investors looking to support certain programs, with the system designed to benefit those who commit to long-term investments.

There are 25 zones in the state: Bristol, Central Falls, Cranston, Cumberland, East Providence, Narragansett, Newport, North Providence, Pawtucket, Providence, South Kingstown, Warren, West Warwick, Westerly and Woonsocket.
