Newport Residents Asked To Help Keep Storm Drains Clear

Residents with a catch basin in front of their home are asked to rake away leaves, branches and other debris to keep stormwater flowing.

NEWPORT, RI — As summer turns to autumn and the leaves start to fall, Newporters are asked to help do their part to keep the city's storm drains clear to keep stormwater flowing freely and prevent clogs.

"While the City works to clear storm drains and catch basins to keep stormwater runoff flowing, we're not always able to keep up with falling leaves," city officals said in a statement.

Anyone with a catch basin in front of their home is asked to clear away leaves, branches and other debris with a rake, especially before a predicted storm. Do not try to lift the grate, only clear what is on top.
