Newport Residents Come Home to Stranger Crashed on Couch

Police said the 24-year-old city man was drunk and argumentative after officers woke him up.

Newport police arrested a 24-year-old city man for trespassing after he fell asleep on a couch in a stranger’s apartment, causing a bit of a fright early Monday morning.

Police said Austin Behan, 24, of 70 Carroll Ave., Newport, was found asleep by three residents of an apartment elsewhere on Carroll Avenue on their couch at around 1:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, the residents said they didn’t know who the man was and there should be nobody in the apartment.

Police said it took several attempts to wake up Behan and when he finally roused, he ”took an immediately aggressive stance” and refused to answer questions. He appeared intoxicated and was eventually take into police custody without incident.

He was later released with a Oct. 28 summons to appear in Newport District Court.

A check of the apartment showed nothing was taken, nor was there any damage. It appears that Behan got inside through an unlocked door, according to a police report.
