Newport Seeks Damages for Trampled Dunes during Race

Nearly 5,000 runners trampled the dunes, necessitating a repair project, according to city officials.

The city of Newport is seeking nearly $5,000 from the organizers of the Newport Marathon to pay for damages caused by runners who allegedly trampled sand dunes at Easton’s Beach.

EcoRI.com reported that Eident Sports Marketing of Providence was sent a letter on Dec. 5 from the city asking for the money to plant grass seedlings to cover the 4,000 square feet of dunes.

The dunes were reportedly trampled by runners who were heading to the starting line and by spectators who stood on top of the dunes to watch the start of the race.
