Newport Woman Charged with Shoplifting

Police charged Sandra Akissa Hernandez, 31, of 15 Meeting St., Newport, with larceny for allegedly stealing numerous articles of clothing from the Newport Walmart on Connell Highway at around 4:59 p.m. on Thursday.

Police said a loss prevention officer at the store watched Hernandez conceal items in her purse before walking out of the store.

Hernandez was stopped outside and later told police that she did steal the items because she didn’t have enough money to pay for them.

Police said they found a small amount of marijuana in her purse and she was issued a citation.

Hernandez is due to appear in court on the shoplifting charge on Jan. 14.
