Newport's April Cleanups Collect 16 Tons of Recyclables, 20 Bikes and Debris
Volunteers participated in two events this past April.
The final numbers are in, and volunteers who participated in recent cleanup events in Newport removed an enormous amount of garbage, recyclables and other items from various sites across the City.
Residents reused and recycled 20 bicycles that will go to The East Bay Met school and Bike Newport, dozens of furniture items that are usable and a whopping 33,207 pounds of recyclable materials.
Specific categories include 10,322 pounds of electronics, 5,908 pounds of scrap metal, 4,542 pounds of rigid plastics, 7,380 pounds of shredded paper, more than 2,554 pounds of clothing and household items to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State, 1,559 pouns of books to Discover Books and 882 pounds of cardboard and mixed recycling.

Residents also volunteered at a dozen cleanup events for Earth Day across the city, removing 2,989 pounds of debris from the shore and on land.
The Newport Clean City program said in a statement that it wanted to thank all the organizations and groups that took part: Save The Bay & Pruitt Chiropractic - Easton’s Beach; Clean Ocean Access - Brenton Point State Park, Fort Adams and the Cliff Walk; Off Broadway Neighborhood Association - Off Broadway neighborhood and Equality Park; NewportRIRocks - Morton Park & the surrounding areas; Old Colony & Newport Railway - along the railway; The Point Association cleaned up and beautified parks in their neighborhood; The Friends of the Waterfront - King Park; Newport County Salt Water Fishing Club - areas of Fort Adams; Aquidneck Land Trust & St. Michaels School - Miantonomi Park; Friends of Ballard Park - Ballard Park.

The next Clean City event will be the Fall Recycling Day, held on Saturday, September 26 at Easton’s Beach.
“We hope Newport area residents will continue to attend and divert even more material from the landfill,” the Clean City Program said in a release. “This event will also feature a bulky item amnesty portion, where residents can make an appointment to drop off a limited amount of bulky items for disposal.”
