NUWC Engineer Wins National Defense Award
Timothy Straw is an engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport and lives in Narragansett.

Timothy Straw, an engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, R.I., has been selected as winner of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Bronze Medal for 2014. The NDIA Bronze Medal is an annual award that recognizes outstanding individual achievements in science or engineering in the field of undersea warfare (USW).
Straw is an electrical engineer with 41 years of experience at NUWC that has focused on the development of and in-service support for hull-mounted and deployed sonar transducers and arrays. He has built a reputation as a prolific inventor and is recognized as a dedicated and skilled manager, leader and mentor.
A resident of Narragansett, R.I., Straw holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a master of science in electrical engineering from The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, N.Y.

Straw will be presented with the Bronze Medal during the NDIA Undersea Warfare Division Fall meeting September22-24 in Groton, Conn.
NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea System Command, is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Wash.
