Obituary: Elizabeth C. McCarthy, 88, Loved Bicycling on Ocean Drive

Elizabeth C. McCarthy, 88 of Newport, RI passed away at home after a lengthy illness on Friday, June 19, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Patrick F. McCarthy.

Born December 13, 1926 in Newport, RI she was a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Alice K. (McCullough) Murphy of Ireland. Elizabeth was a graduate of St. Catherine’s Academy, Newport Class of 1945. In 1953, she married Patrick F. McCarthy. Elizabeth worked as an assembler at GE Monowat Company.

An active member of St. Mary’s Guild and St. Mary’s Parish in Newport, she enjoyed bicycling around the Ocean Drive, boating and summers at Gooseberry Beach. She enjoyed spending time with her grandson, being a homemaker and baking.

She is predeceased by her daughter, Germaine McCarthy-Adams of Bristol, RI, brother, John Murphy, sisters, Helen Finn and Joan Viti, and godfather Daniel Moriarty.

Elizabeth is survived by her son, Patrick F. McCarthy Jr. of Newport, RI, grandson, Brendan Peter Adams of Bristol, RI, son-in-law, Paul Adams of Bristol, RI and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 5-7 pm on Monday, June 22, 2015 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 23 at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street in Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown, RI.
