Obituary: John Charles Nelson, Sr., 81

John Charles Nelson, Sr., 81, of Newport, died Friday, November 14, 2014 at John Clarke Health Care Center Middletown, RI.

Born in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late William Nelson Sr. and Helena (Cuffey) Nelson Smith

Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a talented chef working for various restaurants on Aquidneck Island.

He is survived by his children Linda Hickman and her husband Aloysius of Chesapeake, VA, John Nelson Jr. and his partner Christine Bailey of Newport, RI, Helena Miller and her husband Glenn of Middletown, RI, Lawrence Nelson and his wife Victoria of Chesapeake, VA, Mark Nelson and David Nelson both of Newport, RI. He also leaves a brother Robert Smith and his wife Karen of New York as well as 14 Grandchildren and 33 Great Grandchildren. He was married to Edna Wells for 28 years.

John was the father of the late Norman Nelson and brother of the late William Nelson Jr.,
Douglas Smith, William Smith, and Delores Brown.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus L. Wheatland Blvd, Newport. His funeral service will begin at 1:00pm in the church.

Burial with Military Honors will follow at Newport Memorial Park.
