Parking Ban In Newport Ahead Of Significant Winter Storm

The city hopes to keep as many vehicles off the street as possible during the storm.

NEWPORT, RI — As Rhode Island braces for a foot or more of snow in the coming days, a parking ban is in place across Newport, starting Wednesday night.

The ban will be in place from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 5 p.m. Thursday. Any vehicles parked on the following streets 30 minutes after the ban starts will be subject to a tow.

  • Bellevue Avenue from Kay Street to Bowery Street
  • Bedlow Avenue
  • Bliss Road
  • Broadway
  • Coggeshall Avenue
  • East Bowery Street
  • Farewell Street
  • Friendship Street
  • Gibbs Avenue
  • Gould Street; Kay Street
  • Powell Avenue
  • Spring Street
  • Summer Street
  • Thames Street
  • Third Street
  • Warner Street
  • Washington Street
  • Washington Square
  • West Marlboro Street
  • West Narragansett Avenue
  • William Street
  • Van Zandt Avenue from J.T. Connell Memorial Road East to Malbone Road.

To help make snow removal easier, Newport residents are encouraged to park in the free lots at the Gateway Visitor’s Center, Mary Street and Easton’s Beach during the storm. The city also encouraged residents to work with their neighbors with available driveway space to keep as many vehicles off the road during the storm as possible. This both allows plows to work more efficiently and protects vehicles from getting damaged.

After the storm ends, residents are asked to shovel the sidewalk adjacent to their proterty within four hours of the snowfall stopping.

"Newport was designed to be a walkable city and keeping clear paths for pedestrians after it snows is a responsibility that all property owners share – especially during the pandemic as we do our best to provide opportunities to walk outdoors for exercise and to support our local businesses," the city said in a statement.
