PHOTO: Third Graders Win Double Dutch Tournament

Cranston Calvert Elementary School’s third grader, Michael Phelps, and Sullivan Elementary School third graders Adrieanna Matoes and Anyssa Blanc are part of the newly formed Aquidneck Island Double Dutch Jump roping team, which won first place in the 3rd Annual Double Dutch Friendship Tournament sponsored by Sport in Society and the Red Auerbach Youth Foundation in Boston.Â
The third-graders started jumping in the Double Dutch after school program provided by NFCOZ- 21st Century Community Learning Center Enrichment Program and then continued by joining the jump rope team. Ray Malone and Donna Matthews coach the Aquidneck Island Double Dutch team under the auspices of the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County.
Both coaches have been the Double Dutch instructors for NFCOZ for the past couple of years and provides after school programs at Cranston Calvert and Sullivan at Triplett Schools. Ray Malone started the local program for students to continue practicing on the weekends and to get involved in competitive Double Dutch. The team practices on Saturdays at the Florence Gray Center. They plan to expand the program to include fourth and fifth graders.
