Rescues At Sachuest, Area Beaches: Rip Tide Expected To Moderate On Thursday

NEWPORT, RI—The surf at Easton's Beach kept a lot of swimmers happy on Wednesday, which turned out to be a beautiful day by the water, despite the threat from Hurricane Gert. But there were rescues at other area beaches. ABC6 news reported three people got in trouble with rip tides in Westerly. According to the Providence Journal, some swimmers became caught in a rip tide at Second Beach in Middletown and had to be rescued. WPRI-TV 12 reported lifeguards were kept busy at Narragansett beaches, and similar stories were reported at other area beaches. Off Nantucket, one person drowned.

These photos were taken around noon from the Esplanade in Middletown. The video is from the parking lot at the Atlantic Beach Club. The national weather service in Taunton cancelled the high surf advisory as of 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
